Luminaria San Antonio 2012

On Street Bicycle Parking

On Street Bike Parking on South Alamo

Tina and I have lived in San Antonio since 2007, and we’ve not been to one of the major events that celebrates art in San Antonio called Luminaria. The event is sponsored by Rackspace and SAhArts, and it celebrates artistic expression and local artists. On Saturday May 5, 2012, Tina and I decided to drive down to our usual free parking spot at the Blue Start Art Complex then ride over to Hemisphere Park to be part of the crowd of 300,000 expected people (count published at 10pm was 315,000). Rather than checking out Bcycles (Bike Share program) we opted to take our own bicycles because SA Cycles bicycle shop was providing bicycle valet parking free of charge. Luminaria started at 5 PM but the valet parking didn’t start until 7 p.m.  So Tina and I decided not to leave the house right at 5pm and we also wanted to get some street tacos at Tito’s in South Town so we could try out the re-installed on street bike parking (it was once installed in 2011 and removed weeks later due to red tape politics of the Southtown Association).

Tina and I headed to Hemisphere Park only a  few blocks away. With the expected crowd of 300K people I thought working our way to the bike valet would be a nightmare but it wasn’t hard to find at all. The people at SA Cycles really knew what they were doing. I was amazed how simple it was to check the bicycle in and how secure the location was with a fence  and about 3-4 people from SA Cycles monitoring it at all times. It really was nice to ride and then not have to worry about the bicycle or finding a place to lock up especially because the sheer volume of bicycles was amazing. I’ve never seen this many bicycles in one location in my life. According to SA Cycles there were 120 bicycles that checked into the bicycle valet parking that night but I’m sure there was at least 1,000 bicycles that didn’t check into it. There were literally bicycles in trees and hung on fences.

Luminaria was fun but seeing the whole place lit with colorful lights and lasers is really the main attraction for most. One criticism Tina and I both had about the whole Luminara event was that the map/schedule was limited on information. It only gave location, time, art medium and obscure title. A brief description would have been nice for newbies like myself. Tina and I ended up leaving the event around 11:10 pm and we decided to take an almost midnight bicycle tour around downtown riding to the Alamo down Houston Street then to Main Plaza before heading back to the Blue Star Art Complex.

It really was a magical night to be our on a bicycle in San Antonio!
